Potential Doesn’t Mean Anything Without This
Greatness doesn’t just happen
I grew up admiring the GOATs.
Magic Johnson.
Tiger Woods.
John Elway.
Tom Brady.
Michael Jordan.
When you watch them at their peak, it’s easy to believe greatness just happened.
Like no one ever had to push them.
Correct them.
Call them out.
But that’s not how it works.
Interventions
Looking back on my own career, the moments that shaped me most weren’t the wins.
They were the interventions.
The boss who pulled me aside and said:
“I appreciate your sense of humour… but your sarcasm is making you look unserious.”
The peer who caught me after a conversation and said:
“Be careful, what you said could be taken the wrong way.”
The leader who refused to accept “good enough” and kept pushing me to raise my standard.
None of those moments felt great at the time.
But they changed me.
They protected my reputation.
They sharpened my awareness.
They forced me to level up.
The conversation that changed Michael Jordan
I was listening to a podcast recently with Roy Williams, former North Carolina coach, and he shared a story about Michael Jordan that reinforced something important:
Even the greatest need to be coached.
Before Jordan’s freshman season at North Carolina, coach Williams was running conditioning sessions.
At one point, Jordan told him he wanted to become the greatest player to ever play there.
Most leaders would praise that.
Williams didn’t.
He challenged him.
He told Jordan that wanting to be the best meant nothing if he was only willing to work as hard as everyone else. If he truly wanted to separate himself, he would have to push beyond the standard.
That conversation landed.
A couple of weeks later, after another brutal session, Jordan pulled him aside and said:
“You’ll never see anyone outwork me.”
And he didn’t.
He got stronger. Faster. Better.
But more importantly, he chose a different standard.
That’s what stood out to Coach Williams
Not the talent.
The response.
The Leadership Lessons
For leaders, it’s about leveling up. It’s about going beyond the obvious to help our teams level up.
1. Seeing potential isn’t enough
Coach Williams and his mentor Coach Dean Smith saw something in Jordan early.
But they didn’t celebrate it prematurely.
Because potential, by itself, is meaningless.
It’s just possibility.
As leaders, we love spotting potential.
We talk about it. We defend it. We protect it.
But if it’s not translating into performance, it’s a liability, not an asset.
Your job isn’t just to see what someone could be.
It’s to help them confront the gap between who they are today… and what that actually requires.
2. Ambition without discipline is just talk
Jordan wanted to be great.
But Coach Williams understood something many leaders avoid:
Ambition has to be matched with behaviour.
Saying you want to be the best means:
showing up earlier
working harder
pushing past what’s comfortable
doing more than what’s expected
If someone’s actions don’t match their ambition, you don’t have a high performer.
You have a story.
3. Leaders need the courage to challenge
Coach Williams didn’t soften the message.
He didn’t say, “You’ll get there.”
He said, “Not like this.”
That’s where real leadership shows up.
Not in encouragement.
In honest confrontation.
People don’t need more support.
They need clarity.
And sometimes clarity sounds like:
“You’re not there yet.”
“This isn’t your best.”
“If you want more, this isn’t enough.”
That’s uncomfortable.
But it’s also the moment that changes trajectories.
4. Greatness is a choice, not a trait
Jordan’s greatness wasn’t automatic.
It wasn’t guaranteed by talent.
It was chosen, daily, through effort, standards, and consistency.
That’s the part people often skip.
We admire outcomes…
but ignore the discipline behind them.
Talent and drive might get someone noticed.
But only disciplined behaviour sustains greatness.
The Real Question
Coach Williams didn’t just see that Michael Jordan wanted greatness.
He coached him to understand what it would take.
That’s the job.
So the question is:
Are we willing to do the same for our people?
Not just encourage them.
Not just protect them.
But challenge them.
Because that one conversation…
might be the difference between potential…
and performance.
